This lens is one of the best portrait lenses on the market. The other "best" lens for portrait work is the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art lens. We recommend trying them both.
The Canon 85mm f/1.2 a great choice for portraits and low light situations. The background blur is wonderful. The focus is extremely sharp. Distortion and chromatic aberration are minimal. The lens is rather large in size, but it feels great in your hands. As wonderful as it is for portraits, it’s not perfect for all situations. It focuses rather slowly, which will be a disappointment to sports fans. For sports, we think you’ll be better off with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art lens. The manual focus on the Canon is a focus-by-wire arrangement that uses a focus motor to adjust the internal glass elements while you turn the focus ring. The camera must be powered on for manual focus to work, and on certain cameras you need to press the shutter release button half way down as well. The focus ring turns very freely, which can make you think that something is amiss. It’s not, that’s the way it’s designed. In the end, this lens does produce some very fine photos.
