This is the sharpest ultra-wide lens available. It's a long-time favorite with landscape and architectural photographers because it's so sharp and the field of view is so wide. Its 14mm focal length is only 2mm shorter than a 16mm lens, but adds over 7 degrees to the field of view. A fantastic benefit of the very short focal lens is the large depth of field. Even wide open at f/2.8, the depth of field becomes infinite when you focus on a subject at least 8 feet away. This is a great benefit in difficult focusing situations such as night photography, stars, or the northern lights.
This newer version II lens is far superior to the previous version because it's sharp across the image and it's almost distortion free. We found that really interesting images are produced by getting real close to the subject - we mean really close. This fills the frame with the subject and adds a very interesting new perspective to the shot. It boasts superior image quality thanks to 2 aspherical elements and UD-glass elements. The field of view is 114-degrees (diagonal) on full frame bodies. It's an "L-series" lens with great build quality. It focuses fast, and it can focus as close as 8 inches from the subject. It should be on your list when you think rent wide-angle canon lens.
