The 300mm f/4 L, like the 200mm f/2.8 L, packs a lot of value into a less bulky package compared to the larger aperture versions of these lenses. It’s sharper than the long zooms, it has image stabilization, and it has a retractable lens hood. We like the convenience of quickly sliding the hood out/in for use/storage, or to gain access to a filter. This is a good choice when you need superior sharpness and fairly long reach but can’t be tied down with a larger, heavier lens. It is relatively light at 2.6 lb (1,190g) and is very well built. Optimum sharpness is achieved when stepped down one or two stops. Corner sharpness is very good. Put a little distance between the subject and the background, open up the aperture and your subject will stand out against a smoothly blurred background.
